Kishwaukee -DeKalb Kiwanis New Sponsorship of Salvation Army Events.
Two key service projects for the DeKalb community are for the first time being sponsored by Kishwaukee – DeKalb Kiwanis. The events, previously sponsored by radio station WLBK radio personality, T. D. Ryan, hoped to drive collection enough to feed hundreds for Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays.
The first event “Let’s Talk Turkey” was on Friday, November 21st with Ryan serving as the podcaster, and collection support from many of Kishwaukee – DeKalb members was led by member, Bill Finucane, and lasted all day with doners delivering turkeys and monetary donations. 25 members contributed their time and effort, netting a total of 306 turkeys and $5,135 of money donated.
The second event entitled “Freezing for Food” was held in the HyVee parking lot on December 4, 5 and 6, again led by T. D. Ryan and Kiwanis member Bill Finucane. This 3-day event held outside in the freezing cold for a total of 22 hours during that 3-day span. Again, for the benefit of the Salvation Army of DeKalb. Each of the 3 days was the coldest days of December to date. The success was incredible with 5,917 items including non-perishable food items, canned goods, personal hygiene products, paper products, and donations of $16,969. Funds raised had a value of 141,669 lbs. of contributions.
Kishwaukee – DeKalb Kiwanis has served the children of the world and the local community since 1969, 57 years strong. The current membership is 42 community leaders, many of those have been in the Club for 40 years or more. The Club is proud to help headline these events to support all of Salvation Army, DeKalb’s effort under the leadership of executive director, Jim Spencer, also a Kiwanis member. So many residents depend on these holiday events, and Kiwanis takes pride in being the new sponsor and leader.
This success will lead to another effort at the end of 2026 and hopefully for years to come.
