Kishwaukee-DeKalb Kiwanis is joining many community organizations in celebrating America’s 250th. DeKalb, Illinois, is actively preparing for the national America 250 celebration (July 4, 2026), marking the U.S. founding, with local events planned by the DeKalb Public Library (history programs, cultural events) and support from the City of DeKalb and County Board, coordinating with the statewide Illinois America 250 Commission to explore local history and future, including art grants and a commemorative passport program. Expect community-led events reflecting DeKalb’s role in American history through 2026, focusing on diverse stories and civic engagement.

Defining Statement
“Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time.”

Motto “Serving the Children of the World”

Purpose
To improve the quality of life for children and families worldwide.

Mission
As a thriving organization of men, women, and youth, we are dedicated to serving the children of the world and improving the quality of life worldwide. Being committed to this mission calls each of us to live by the Objects of Kiwanis.

Vision
We will be the world’s premier organization engaging adult and youth volunteers to improve the quality of life worldwide with a goal of 1 million members by 2015, the 100th birthday of Kiwanis.

History of Kiwanis The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit, Michigan, USA on January 21, 1915. A year later the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was chartered, and Kiwanis International grew rapidly into a leading service club in these two founding nations. In 1962, worldwide expansion was approved, and today Kiwanis clubs are active in every part of the world.

Women in Kiwanis Membership was opened to women in 1987. There are now more than 51,000 women members, and 1 in 7 club presidents is a woman.

Associated Kiwanis organizations (Service Leadership Programs) Kiwanis International sponsors several service clubs:

Circle K International providing lifelong service with collegiate leaders since 1936;
Key Club International developing high school leaders through service since 1925;
Builders Clubs developing middle school student leaders since 1975;
K-Kids teaching elementary students leadership through service; and
Aktion Club members promoting community service among adults with disabilities.
